Well it must otherwise corporate America would not be using TV advertising. There are many reasons why TV advertising works and it starts from an early age on a subconscious level. If you remember (actually you probably don’t being you where so young) when you were just learning to feed yourself. You really had no idea what you were doing. You would watch your mom , dad or primary care giver put the spoon up to your mouth and fill it with your favorite food. One day the person who was feeding you decided that it was time for you to take over the job and handed you the spoon. If you think back to that day you would remember how awkward you were. Out of balance, wiggly arm and little coordination you persisted. Time after time as you tried, most of your attempts would end up on the floor, table, hair or just about anywhere but in your mouth. So guess what TV advertising companies know this and profit billions and billions of dollars each year. Where is this leading? Read on and let me explain.

After you mastered finding your mouth on a consistent basis, your mom, dad or primary care giver decided once again that it was time for you to proceed onto yet another milestone of precious life. You loved the attention and felt very much loved and accepted by another human being and didn’t even know that this feeling of acceptance would eventually inadvertently coheres you to gladly remove money out of your pockets at the check out counter later on in life. The feeling behind this phrase has followed you all the way to this very moment in your life and you may not have even realized it as much as TV advertising companies do. TV advertising companies rely on your up bringing more than you may realize. At this point I would like to add another relevant dramatic point that TV advertising companies prey on. This point is very huge.

As you were growing up getting older and more mature, you probably have had some sort of experience that was so frightening that you would never forget and would do almost anything to ensure that it doesn’t happen to you. I see that the accountant had ads guru Sir Martin Sorrell, is outside the company has recently prophesied. As usual, and if someone in the past notoriously inaccurate and unaccountable business of advertising, his prophecies are hopelessly wrong.

Like the discredited tobacco industry before them, and also due to declining budgets (sales) that they are now (and has for some time) is aimed at emerging markets in Asia, Africa andother areas.

The reason for tobacco is the major move meedoĆ«nloos marketing overseas is obvious to everyone – in one word – Cancer!

And why the big groups to move their efforts to advertise overseas is also obvious to everyone – in two words – clutter and unaccountability!

Advertising is about as unpalatable its supposed target audience in the Western world than smoking!

Sorrell boast with pride that WPP aims to increase its business in the acceleratedgrowing market confidence in the less dynamic U.S. and Western Europe reduced.

Western Europe and the U.S. are the very places where the practice of advertising is increasingly discredited and questioned. Sorrell, like others in its industry, ignores categorical advice from experts.

Only in their absence of fresh ideas can flourish and take hold.

The longer we live, the slower the pace of intellectual progress. And in the land of ads we see very little progress indeed. In fact, no progresswhatever!

All human knowledge is provisional, but it is also incremental, the sum of what we know today is greater than thirty years ago – with, perhaps the sole exception of marketing and advertising.

There is much, much better, develop ideas for effective communication and marketing, they all are dammed by faint praise by the ad agencies over the years. All the agencies have ever wanted to do was to raise rates and increasethe messy media landscape, with no responsibility of any real meaning whatsoever.

No they want all this wasteful process to repeat again … shame on you all!

Advertising Development and AdMaps

Many of my clients use advertising to build awareness of the products or services, and they often wonder if they could be doing a better job of developing effective advertising messages.

One tool I used way back in my “big marketing” days at P&G and the giant soft drink company based in Atlanta, was the AdMap. What this does is clarify the purpose of advertising and helps to define a measure against which a potential ad could be measured.

For many clients, the problem at hand is just making sure than potential customers know they exist, but beyond that, the problem is often more about how to differentiate yourself from the competition.

Say for example you are a plumber and you are trying to get the word out about your plumbing business. One obstacle is simply name recognition, but you may also discover that in your area most consumers believe that plumbers are unreliable, slow and eager to make more money at the consumer’s expense. In this case, you may also want to develop a message that convinces consumers that you are different and will actually show up when you say you will and accurately diagnose the problem.

The AdMap helps illustrate the core belief in the mind of your customer that you are trying to change. You have to know something about your customer to do this exercise, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. Here’s the basic layout:

When you see this, you can build the kind of advertising message that might change the beliefs, and thus the behavior, of your potential customers. The message has to be credible and truthful, and tap into a positive image of what it would be like to use your product or service.

One of the most powerful examples I know of appears in the latest Apple ad as part of the “Mac and PC” campaign (find it on YouTube under Mac vs. PC Broken Promises. I’ve designed an AdMap based on the ad, and some of the thinking that might be behind it:

Now, the ad is also humorous and well-designed, but it clearly plays on consumer beliefs about Microsoft and sows a seed of doubt about how likely Microsoft is to have really “fixed” their operating system this time.

The next time you develop an ad, try using this tool to analyze the message you are creating and the beliefs you are trying to change. You can practice on your favorite TV ads and see what a powerful way of looking at advertising this can be.

Advertising Online – The Advantages of Advertising Online Compared to Traditional Offline Media

Although both types of advertising of course has benefits and advantages, does online advertising really offer more than offline? Or, should they both be used in conjunction with each other, as long as the company can afford it? Below are some of the reasons online advertising is getting more popular and effective when we compare it to offline advertising, including newspapers and flyers etc.

Cheaper - If you weigh up the difference between offline and online advertising, online advertising is usually much cheaper than offline advertising. A decent cost per click budget or website advert is generally much cheaper than a series or run of offline or newspaper advertising and is often much more targeted and rewarding. This is not always the case, especially if you get deals for long term advertising offline, but on the whole you normally find that online advertising works out to be more cost effective and controllable in the long run.

Target Audience – A major advantage of online advertising is that you can target your audience much more efficiently. For example, if you advertise in a newspaper, although you can choose the newspaper that you consider being nearer your perfect audience, you will still have many more people who do not fit your criteria. With online advertising you can select who your advert is seen by, by niche, age, location and many other factors, especially when using cost per click or other social media types of advertising.

More Options – When you consider the types of offline advertising there is, you will normally be able to name the top three, which are newspaper advertising, flyers and television. But when you look at online advertising the options seem to be much more, with cost per click, banner advertising, email marketing, site sponsorship, directory advertising and many more. Online advertising also has more flexibility using these options, as they can easily be turned on and off, changed or re-written and republished to take advantage of any related news that might be relevant to the advert.

Quicker - One of the biggest advantages of advertising online is how quick it can be. From the second you publish your new advert, news story or pay per click advert, it will be live on the internet and have the potential to be viewed by thousands of people. With offline advertising, especially newspaper adverts, you could be waiting up to a week for your advert to go to press and then be delivered to all of the possible readers, meaning you have to plan well in advance to capture time critical or seasonal advertising opportunities.

So, should all businesses ditch offline advertising and go fully online? Of course they should not, as for some businesses offline advertising will always have some mileage to it, and although it is hard to believe, not everyone has access to the internet or the know how to use it successfully to find what they want.

Even so, online advertising is growing rapidly and offline advertising is really suffering, as online seems to offer much more flexibility and options to get the message across for many businesses and companies.

Concrete – The Largest Untapped Advertising Canvas

Everywhere I go I look at concrete and say “theres one” imagine “Coke” being on that. Every ugly concrete center island at a gas station I look and think “that should be resurfaced with the Nascar logo”. When I’m stuck in traffic due to road construction I look at the concrete barriers and think whoever owns that barrier should be selling the space to an advertiser.

The idea goes on and on, bridges, bus stops, train stations, sidewalks, shopping centers, walls of buildings. I’m sure many downtowns around the world wouldn’t mind a little extra revenue selling sidewalk space to an advertiser.

During the last few years as the decorative concrete market has emerged competition has forced the creation of new products, tools and application techniques.

There are a few entrepreneurs who are making a living selling custom stencils specifically for adhering to concrete. A new product on the market is a gel which is mixed with color dyes and stains that works as a carrier for color. It prevents the stains and dyes from seeping under the stencil resulting in a sharp clean edge.

Any size and design can be created. The process is fairly simple. Stencils can be created with an image and shaped into any size for any surface. Large stencils come in pieces and assembled by basically matching the dots. A 30 foot tall bottle of Coke or Absolut Vodka can be assembled and applied to a building wall.

The canvas is created with a concrete overlay that is sprayed onto a vertical surface with a hopper gun and smoothed. Once dry the stencil can be applied and colors filled in to finish the image. Once complete the finished product is protected with a concrete sealer. The result will last years.

This concept is already starting. So far the concept has been used as part of restaurant floor plans and retail store design. Business logos are on entrance areas and other strategic locations on floors.

We’re also seeing this on floors in schools, universities, stadiums and airports. So far the advertising concept has been limited to the proprietor of the property advertising their own image.

As soon as the advertising community catches on to the potential we’ll start seeing drab concrete become a decorative venue and business opportunity.
